When Jelena Faye started her demanding job as a software engineer, she noticed her energy would dip by mid-morning. “Coffee wasn’t enough,” she laughs. “I needed a breakfast that actually worked with my brain, not against it.”
She realized the heavy, greasy breakfasts she once loved were sabotaging her focus. “They left me sluggish, not sharp,” Jelena recalls. So, she started experimenting with lower-fat, protein-rich breakfasts that could fuel her through coding marathons without the post-meal crash.
Today, her mornings are structured and simple. A bowl of warm quinoa with almond milk, topped with blueberries and flax seeds, gives her a satisfying start. Other days, it’s a green smoothie with spinach, banana, and a scoop of plant-based protein.
“I try to keep the fat content low in the mornings because I notice it helps me stay alert,” she says. “And fiber keeps me full without weighing me down.”
Jelena also avoids added sugar in her breakfasts. “I want stable energy, not roller coasters,” she explains. Her approach is not about dieting but tuning in to what supports her mentally. “Breakfast sets the tone for my day,” she adds. “I want that tone to be focused, calm, and energized.”
Her advice to others? “Don’t overcomplicate it. Find a few go-to breakfasts that feel good in your body and stick with them.”
